It's true Joomla is an open-source free CMS (content management system), but that doesn't mean there is no cost involved. The cost is usually in time spent on the learning curve.
Now there are some decent tutorials out there and even a manual you can download and read. If you're cash-poor and time-rich, then that's the way to go. Or if you're one of those people who just love to learn new programs or systems, Joomla can be a satisfying topic.
However, it's important to weigh the cost of learning the system to having someone else who is proficient in it do it for you. I don't try to sell my services. I don't have to. My goal is not to get rich at any cost. My goal is to help people, and it's my personal philosophy that by helping others achieve their goals, I will be compensated. It's supply and demand - basic economics. Fill a need, build a better mousetrap, etc. etc.
I do occasionally educate business/website owners on the value of having an expert do it for you. I believe this helps them achieve their goals faster and with less expense over time. They, then, can focus on what they are best at - their business!
My business is Joomla. Sure I design websites, but I'm almost exclusively Joomla at this point. It's just so darn cost-effective. We can put up a beautiful site with amazing functionality and features for a fraction of the cost of a custom-built system. That frees us up to partner on the really important and often neglected area of getting targeted traffic that will convert into customers.
Sure you can put up a website on your own or you can partner with someone who has already mastered the learning curve and will help you get to your end goal.
